“Nature is a symbol here, a carrier of an emotional charge, meanings...
“Until recently, I was painting objects – inanimate matter. Mainly old, carrying the story I wanted to tell. In my works the subject matter changes, but the nature remains similar: nostalgia, melancholy, beauty that I see in the passing of time” – get to know the extraordinary world of paintings in Warsaw artist Klaudia Choma.
In 2015, Klaudia Choma obtained her master’s degree at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw under the watchful eye of prof. Stanisław Baj. For years she has been painting in oil on canvas, and her art works are combined with subdued, earthy or gray colors. You will not find strong light and shade here, shapes and light are carried out delicately, softly, without unnecessary contrasts. The compositions of this Warsaw painter are dressed in melancholy and an atmosphere of unreal.
– Until recently, I painted objects – inanimate matter. Mostly old, carrying the story I wanted to tell. The subject matter changes in my works, but the character remains similar: nostalgia, melancholy, beauty that I see in passing – says Klaudia Choma in an interview with Art in House.

Plaster falling off the walls, tarnish and peeling paint, damaged furniture – the poetics of abandoned places occupied a permanent place in the work of Klaudia Choma for a long time. The marginalized space sometimes comes back to the fore as an aesthetic object, and from time to time a lone rabbit sits on top of old furniture.

Inspirations: Jerzy Harasymowicz in the works of Klaudia Choma
– The poetry of Jerzy Harasymowicz is a certain pattern of writing and thinking about the mountains and the Bieszczady Mountains. His inspiration also had other dimensions: historical and metaphysical, identical to my interests, the artist explains. – Elements of the natural world pass into an extraordinary dimension – fairy-tale, surreal. It is mainly related to the landscape of childhood. Nature is a symbol here, a carrier of an emotional charge, meanings and metaphors.

Birds constitute a large group of works by Klaudia Choma: we can find here ibises, cranes, flamingos, partridges, guinea fowls, ducks, roosters, owls, peacocks and ravens. Each of these bird representations is treated with precision, especially noticeable when making feathers: even an attentive eye will appreciate her attention to detail in close contact with the work of Klaudia Choma.

Until recently, geese were one of the painter’s favorite bird motifs.
As Klaudia Choma says, her ideals are derived primarily from classicism, romanticism and realism. What is characteristic here is the sparse color, contrasting chiaroscuro, soft modeling, emphasizing the textural values of the canvas and dynamizing the composition through textured backgrounds combined with a realistic image of the object.

Klaudia Choma has been very keen on painting foxes for some time.
– Monochrome, painted impasto background is the common denominator of all my works. I contrast them with the heroes of the foreground, with elements characterized by a wealth of forms and means of expression – explains the Warsaw painter.
