Online art: collection of artworks by Frida Kahlo
We will see over 200 works in an online gallery collected at Google Arts & Culture, which cooperates with 33 museums in the organization of the collection of works of the extraordinary Mexican artist – online art for the time of the coronavirus pandemic (Covid-19).
As many as 33 museums and other cultural institutions took part in the preparation of this online gallery, including the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco and the Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya (Japan). Frida’s beautiful self-portraits, which are currently available to viewers on the Google Arts & Culture platform, can be enlarged and viewed in close-up. The presented works include paintings, sketches, as well as archival materials from the artist’s life, such as letters and diaries.
Part of the online gallery dedicated to Frida Kahlo focused on the “rich symbolism” in her self-portraits and still lifes, dated 1951–1954, relating to passion and human sexuality.
This virtual exhibition is not just online art – the editorial material deals with various aspects of the painter’s work and life, for example, she examines her impact on LGBTQ artists such as Julio Salgado from California, who writes: “Whether it’s an image, film, book, it is important that we question the ideas of who we are as people. Frida and other colorful artists did it a long time ago and we must continue and respect this tradition. ” In turn, historian Alejandro Rosas explains the connections between the work of the Mexican painter and the revolution in Mexico: “When we talk about Frida Kahlo, the most common misunderstanding is the relationship between her work and the Mexican revolution. Nothing could be further from the truth: the essence of Frida does not come from armed conflict, but from Mexico, which arose later“, he writes.
In addition to the Mexican painter’s art gallery, the Google Arts & Culture website also features works by artists inspired by Frida’s work. We recommend!
