New painting by Boris Fiodorowicz at an art auction
We asked Boris Fiodorowicz what the painting “ST. MAGRITTA GOLCONDA.PL “, which will appear at the 50th New Art Auction at the Art in House Auction House on April 16 – is about:
– The painting “Santa Magritta Golconda.PL” is nothing more than an interpretation of the painting “Golconda” by Rene Magritte. Magritte’s surreal paintings should not be interpreted directly, one should get carried away by their mystery. The answer to the question about the symbolism of the objects presented in his paintings remains open. An umbrella or an apple are only an umbrella and an apple, until we give them a different, conventional meaning, so any similarity of the symbolism used in my painting with, for example, the current situation of the struggle for women’s rights in Poland should be regarded as coincidental – he says.
Although, as Borys Fiodorowicz adds: Personally, I think that beliefs must be fought for, and the question of their evaluation does not belong to us – people. And in the Christian tradition, women who became saints are often martyrs who did not want to renounce their faith – their own convictions.

About problems of the modern world
The subject of your art works, most often, is very topical and touches upon the subject of numerous moral, ecological and social challenges that we observe in the surrounding world. You touch uncomfortable, often controversial, hot and topical topics. Where did the idea for such a juxtaposition of two worlds come from – the sacred with the profane?
– Seemingly, these are not two worlds – certainly not that distant. After all, we all – most of us for sure – try to live our lives more or less decently. As far as the Bible is concerned, this means living the 10 Commandments. The subject matter I am discussing is only the interpretation of these principles in the context of current problems in the modern world – says Borys Fiodorowicz.
As the artist further explains: Experiencing the problems posed by the present day in confrontation with Christian values, the subject matter of the paintings is born in a natural way.
Your work is often called icons, but you use the phrase “icon-inspired paintings” more often. Why aren’t these icons in your opinion?
– My works are inspired by sacred painting, depictions of saints, but they differ far from the canon, characteristic of an icon. Also in terms of technology, my paintings, although they are painted on a board, differ in the painting technique used – says the artist in an interview with Art in House.
