Piotr Banaszkiewicz
Piotr Banaszkiewicz was born in Warsaw in 1981. Initially, he studied economics in Warsaw but abandoned those studies to fully devote himself to art. He also studied architecture and fine arts in Warsaw and completed military service in the meantime. Ultimately, he graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, earning a degree in printmaking with outstanding achievements. He was awarded the Minister of Science and Higher Education Scholarship twice and the Rector's Scholarship four times.
His artistic journey began with a fascination for Dutch painting and the works of masters such as Rembrandt, Goya, Dürer, Bosch, and Bruegel. This passion, which started around the age of 15, continues to accompany him to this day. As a child, he eagerly studied and copied the works of old masters. Currently, he paints daily, using oil painting techniques that allow him to create directly on canvas. He begins by sketching the composition, and once satisfied with it, he refines the details.
Banaszkiewicz values freshly completed paintings the most and states that his favorite piece is always the one he is currently working on. His works may seem dark or somber, but the artist strives to convey positive emotions and the joy he derives from the act of painting itself.
Banaszkiewicz draws inspiration from various eras and diverse creators, including old masters such as Aleksander Gierymski, Alfred Lebenstein, Caspar David Friedrich, Bruegel, and Dutch landscape painters, as well as lesser-known Dutch masters. He perceives viewing art as a hypnotic and highly inspiring activity.
The artist paints recurring motifs and landscapes, often en plein air—even at night. He is particularly inspired by the surroundings of Wolin Island, water, architecture, and the moon. These elements are visible in his works, which remain full of passion and a constant search for new challenges.
