World Press Photo Award for a Polish photographer
As every year, the lens masters competed in categories such as nature, environment, portraiture, contemporary affairs, sport and photojournalism of the year. The Japanese photographer Yasuyoshi Chiba got the main prize for the best photo. Polish artist Tomek Kaczor received the award for the best portrait. The winners were selected from over 4,000 photographers from as many as 125 countries.

The winning photo from the photo gallery of Tomek Kaczor presents 15-year-old Ewa from Armenia, who has just woken up from the catatonic state induced by the so-called resignation syndrome, common in refugee children. The photo was taken in a refugee center near Warsaw, and before it spread around the world, it was in Polish magazine “Duży Format”. The work was nominated in World Press Photo also in the main category “Photo of the Year”.
Born in 1984, Tomek Kaczor lives in Warsaw and has been involved in photography for over a dozen years, he also works as a cultural animator and educator. He graduated from the Institute of Polish Culture at the University of Warsaw and the Academy of Photography in Warsaw. He is a co-founder of the “Kontakt” magazine.
World Press Photo is the most important journalistic photography competition in the world, which has been taking place for over half a century thanks to a Dutch foundation founded by artist-photographers. The works are awarded in eight categories, each of which refers to the problems of the modern world.
