Great gallery of Artemisia paintings in London
In April, the National Gallery in London begins the largest exhibition of paintings of the 17th-century European artist Artemisia Gentileschi (1593–1654) in the history of Great Britain. In the gallery of her paintings we will see as many as 35 works from private collections and public collections from around the world.
The artist lived at a time when women and their artistic activities were not widely accepted, she also painted subjects reserved for men – artists. However, the Italian painter was a unique personality – she rejected conventions, resisted the demands of women, achieved great success and created a unique gallery of her painting, she was also a storyteller of her era.
The gallery of European artist paintings is based on building awareness of the unique role that the painter played in her time. It will also be an interesting review of the painter’s career: from studying with her father Orazio Gentileschi in Rome, through the Florentine period, to a 25-year stay in Naples and a short trip to London. This gallery of paintings will be a unique opportunity to see in one place the greatest works of Artemisia, including two versions of her great work “Judith cuts off the head of Holofernes”, as well as her numerous self-portraits.
Follow in the footsteps of Artemisia from Rome to Florence, Venice, Naples and London. Hear her voice from letters and see the world through the eyes of this amazing artist – her painting gallery at the National Gallery in London will be available to visitors from April 4 – July 26, 2020.
