Rafał Olbiński art gallery in Kielce
Rafał Olbiński is a representative of contemporary surrealism and magical realism born in Kielce, famous worldwide, sometimes classified as a symbolist by art historians. His art gallery includes not only paintings painted on canvas, but also book illustrations, posters and magazine cover designs. They have brought him great international fame.
On art exhibition in September 2020 at the National Museum in Kielce, you will see, among others Rafał Olbiński’s earlier works: illustrations for articles and cover designs for various periodicals published in the seventies and eighties of the last century, such as the covers of the Polish music magazine Jazz Forum, for which Rafał Olbiński designed the graphic layout for about ten years. When he left for the United States in the early 1980s, he began his illustrative work with the magazine Psychology Today. Later, further orders fell on Rafał Olbiński – not only for magazines, but also for covers, books, as well as posters. At the same time, the artist established cooperation with various cultural institutions (theaters, operas, etc.), for which he made a number of projects.
The works of Rafał Olbiński help to break away from everyday life, transfer to a magical world beyond time and space, devoid of sadness and suffering. It is also, as the organizers of the exhibition write, a world of beautiful women and men subordinate to them. The painting and illustration style of Rafał Olbiński is filled with metaphors and references to culture and art. His work brought Olbiński great fame overseas – he became one of the most popular artists of the turn of the 20th and 21st century, he won over 150 awards and distinctions: among them the prize for the most memorable poster in the world promoting New York.
Rafał Olbiński’s art gallery can be seen from 8/9/2020 – 3/01/2021 at the Former Palace of Krakow Bishops in Kielce.
