Wacław Kondek

Wacław Kondek (July 18, 1917, Dąbrowa Górnicza – 1976). Graphic designer, sculptor, painter, set designer and filmmaker associated with Łódź. In the years 1935-39 he studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Krakow, in the years 1947-49 at the PWSSP in Łódź, graduating in 1952. Works in the field of woodcuts, etchings, linocuts, lithography. He drew with a pen and crayon. He painted pictures in tempera and oil. He wrote columns for the weekly "Odpowiedzy" in the column "Letters to the editor of Od Głosy", and also worked as a press cartoonist. Author of "Ballad" published on the occasion of the individual exhibition Ballads and Scherzo at the TPSP in Łódź (1969). He was also a film and theater set designer, including: dozens of scenography for puppet theaters. In 1952-53 he worked at a film studio in Bielsko-Biała. Łódź was a frequent motif in the artist's paintings - in numerous works he depicted its palaces, churches and factories (including in a series of 42 lithographs entitled "Portraits"). Winner of the City of Łódź Award (1969), "Lodzian of the Year" (1970). He made his debut at the 2nd National Art Exhibition in Warsaw (1952). Participant of approximately seventy group exhibitions in Poland and abroad. Author of 28 individual exhibitions in Poland and 9 abroad. In 1996, a large monographic exhibition of the artist's works, Madonna, Demons and the Human World, took place at the Museum of the History of the City of Łódź. The husband of the painter, Maria (joint painting exhibitions at the Art Propaganda Center in Łódź, 1958, 1964).
