Zdzisław Jurkiewicz
Zdzisław Jurkiewicz (born March 13, 1931, in Wolsztyn, died March 19, 2012 in Będkowo) graduated from the Faculty of Architecture at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology in 1956. He remained associated with the university throughout his academic career, earning a doctorate in 1965, a habilitation in 1978, and the title of professor in 1981. In 1996, he became a full professor. He lectured on drawing, painting, and color theory.
From the 1960s onward, he actively participated in the artistic scene. Between 1960 and 1983, he was a member of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers (ZPAP), and since 1965, he has been part of the Wrocław Group. In the mid-1950s, he co-created the avant-garde painting community in Wrocław, initially focused on geometric abstraction and later evolving toward conceptual and idea-based art. In the 1970s, he created works visualizing various concepts and projects, such as the series "The Shape of Continuity," dedicated to recording actual, measurable lengths within the space of a painting or a sheet of paper. In 1995, he completed the installation "Plants in My Studio."
In addition to painting, drawing, objects, and photography, he has authored numerous theoretical and critical texts on art, as well as a collection of poetry. His works have been exhibited both in Poland and internationally. He has participated in numerous art symposiums, open-air workshops, and artistic meetings. In 1973, he received the Cyprian Kamil Norwid Critics' Award, and in 1995, the Minister of Culture and Art Award, among many other distinctions. His works are featured in leading museum collections in Poland and abroad.
