Item's description:
The main theme of Bronisława Rychter-Janowska’s (1868–1953) work was traditional Polish manor houses. The artist painted 19th-century homes, depicting them both from the outside—surrounded by a melancholic landscape—and from the inside, enriched with vivid colors. She often brought interiors to life by including a solitary female figure seen from behind, who ignores the viewer as she concentrates on a specific activity, such as playing an instrument. The painting At the Piano, created in the 20th century with oil paints on panel, embodies all the most intriguing aspects of Rychter-Janowska’s art: a subdued yet cheerful palette, a composed layout, and a calm, contemplative atmosphere throughout the scene.
