"Carnival XII" is a work from a series depicting surreal sea creatures going to an underwater carnival. The scene visible in the painting refers to the game of chess. The sea creature decided to perform in the parade as a queen leading her knights. In the background you can see corals stylized as towers.
There is also a loose reference to Lewis Carroll's "Through the Looking-Glass, and What Alice Found There" in the painting. In this interpretation, the main character becomes the Duchess.
