Vanitas from Latin "vanity". The concept is related to the keynote of the Book of Ecclesiastes - Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas - Vanity of vanities and all is vanity (Ecclesiastes 1,2 BT).
The theme of vanity is most visible in the Middle Ages and Baroque, the fascination with death and passing was manifested in art and literature. Reflections on the existential background also appeared in other epochs.
It is often depicted in still lifes of northern European painters from Flanders and the Netherlands. Vanity is represented by many symbols: the skull, rotten or withering fruit, clocks and hourglasses, and musical instruments.
