Gaugin and van Gogh’s letter sold at art auction
Two famous painters Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Gauguin, wrote together a letter to French artist Emile Bernard in 1888. They wrote about their lives and joint creation in Arles. The correspondence describes exactly the visits of two artists to brothels. The friendship of two famous artists ended abruptly after a few months.
This letter was jointly written on 1-2 November 1888 – a few weeks before Vincent van Gogh’s mental breakdown. The artist committed suicide two years later.
It was purchased by the Vincent van Gogh Foundation at the Paris Drouot auction house in Paris. The facility will be exhibited at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam at the end of the year. As the new owners of the souvenir after two painters say, this is the only correspondence of van Gogh with another artist, which is why it is so valuable. They add that the letter clearly shows that Gaguin and van Gogh were aware of the fact that their work would revolutionize the world of art.
