Dorota Markowska
A graduate from the Academy of Fine Arts in Gdańsk. Her Diploma was obtained in
professor Jerzy Krechowicz’s graphic studio, an annex of painting in prof. Kiejstuta
Bereźnicki’s studio. She is engaged in both painting and education. By introducing art
to her pedagogical activity she highlights its positive and therapeutic influence. She
has also completed a course on painting animation within the “Twój Vincent” film
project.
In all her abstract, intuitive and representational paintings she uses a great diversity
of techniques and colours. Especially distinctive are her cubistic, derealised towns -
dreamlike places, which, at the same time, seem very familiar. Her works of art
decorate i.a. interiors of Tricity’s firms and institutions.
She does not limit herself to just one subject, yet she is inclined to marina paintings.
The polysemous, expressive sea symbolizes all: spirituality and ephemerality,
permanency and fluidity, mystery and potency, loneliness and strength… Such was
the character of the exhibitions in Boto Theatre, in Nowa Zatoka in Sopot, in
2019/2020.
The artist interprets a subject in her own, distinctive way, thereby expressing
emotions, revealing what is, otherwise, invisible.
Women and their contact with nature are the heroines of a new cycle of Dorota
Markowska’s paintings, exhibited in 2023 in Sztuka Wyboru in Gdańsk. A woman, a
source of both life and beauty, is an immensely thoughtful and sensitive observer.
From nature she derives her virtue and harmony, delight and relief. The green is a
symbol of hope. The bond with nature seems delicate but indissoluble, like of the sun
with water or a land with a sea. In the artist’s pictures the bond is represented by
various compositions and colouring adequate to the aura, with dominant blueness.
We can see elusive, almost intimate moments of sensual immersion in nature, and an
alive relation - its motion and dynamics. Thus, the recent cycle of paintings is a
subtle, soothing image of a woman indulged in nature.
