Midas is the hero of many legends, myths and anecdotes. In myths, he was attributed exceptional stupidity. One of the stories describes how he rescued the stray Silen from the retinue of Dionysus on his way to India. As a reward, Dionysus promised to fulfill one wish of the king. The ruler asked that every thing he touches turn into gold. However, Midas soon realized that he was in danger of starving to death - bread and wine were turning to gold as well. The cup of bitterness was poured out by the fact that he also turned his beautiful daughter into a golden statue. Terrified, he begged Dionysus to lose his gift, he only had to wash his head and hands in the waters of the Pactol River, which had since become gold-bearing.
