Refugium, 2021

"Refugium," a Latin term meaning "refuge," is a compelling painting that offers a profound commentary on the current political landscape and the complex issues of mass migration.

At the heart of the composition stands a striking pink deer, which symbolizes lack of class and bad taste. The use of pink conveys a sense of extravagance and ostentation, sharply contrasting with the gravity of the political challenges at hand. The deer's presence serves as a metaphor for those who may be disconnected from the realities of mass migration, highlighting issues of privilege and indifference.

Draped upon the deer's antlers are blue hands, which are depicted in the process of "ripening." These hands represent individuals or groups who are supposed to take action. The blue color signifies resolve needed in the face of pressing challenges, such as mass migration. However, the fact that these hands remain suspended suggests a state of readiness rather than immediate action, perhaps reflecting the complexity and hesitation that often accompanies political decision-making.

"Refugium" invites viewers to contemplate the state of contemporary politics and the urgent issues surrounding mass migration. The painting belongs to an open painting cycle entitled "Politics" - the main theme of this series is a non-obvious commentary on current events. The author leaves a lot of margin for the viewer to interpret the image. The works from this series have intense, expressive colors and large dimensions. The painting "Refugium" was presented at the cyclical exhibition "Forest of Art", under the theme "Szok" - organized by ZPAP PSU, Opole branch, in September 2021.
