Fangor’s painting is the most expensive-selling art work in Poland!
This is extraordinary news from the art world: the painting “M22” by Wojciech Fangor was auctioned for PLN 7,316,000 (including the auction fee). It is the most expensive piece of art sold in our country.
Fangor’s art work broke the previous record auction sale in our country – so far the record holder was Magdalena Abakanowicz and her installation “Caminando” sold for PLN 8 million. Previously, the most expensive painting created by Polish artist sold in Poland was the work of Stanisław Wyspiański, which was sold in 2017 for PLN 4.36 million. On the other hand, Tamara Lempicka is an absolute record holder on the world art scene, whose painting “Portrait de Marjorie Ferry” was sold in London for a staggering sum of PLN 82 million.
The painting “M22” was made in 1969. This is one of three paintings painted in the style of geometric abstraction by Wojciech Fangor, in which the artist used the shape of a rosette. It was presented at the Fangor solo exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in 1970. The work came to Poland for an art auction from a private collection in Switzerland.
Wojciech Fangor was born in 1922 in Warsaw, died October 25, 2015. He is one of the most famous Polish artists of the 20th century – painter, graphic artist, poster artist and sculptor. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw in 1946. For the Youth and Students Festival in Warsaw, together with Henryk Tomaszewski, he designed outdoor spatial decorations. From then on, his paintings were realized in relation to the space beyond the painting – as in the famous “Study of Space” from 1958, preceding world realizations of environments. and were close to op-art, the culmination of this period was an individual exhibition at the Guggenheim Museum in New York (1970), which also featured the record-breaking work “M22”.
We encourage you to visit our online gallery, where you can find one of Wojciech Fangor’s painted paintings entitled “Sixth Evening”.
