“My paintings are a record of my memories”
Marta Sobierajska is a young artist born in 1990 in Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki near Warsaw. One of her oil paintings will be auctioned at the 49th New Art Auction, which will take place this Friday, March 19, 2021 at 19.30 at the headquarters of the Art in House Auction House in Warsaw.
In 2010, Marta Sobierajska began her studies at the Faculty of Painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, which she completed in 2015 with a painting diploma under the watchful eye of prof. Stanisław Baj and specialization in techniques and technologies of wall painting with prof. Edward Tarkowski.
At the turn of 2013 and 2014, she studied under the Erasmus program at Newcastle University in England at the Faculty of Fine Art. Shortly after obtaining a master’s degree in Fine Arts, she went on an internship at the Centrala Gallery in Birmingham (UK) under the Erasmus + program. Currently, the artist lives in Legionowo and works in Warsaw.
In recent months, Marta Sobierajska has been working on a painting series in which she paints cats. Her art works are devoted to minimalist compositions that are to reflect the contrast between the geometry of the space built by man and the living creature, which is a cat.
– In fact, it is an extension of my earlier works, which were views of the windows, but back then it was about building the atmosphere – adds the artist.
“My paintings are a record of my memories”
The paintings of Marta Sobierajska radiate peace and a sense of timelessness. No wonder that cats appear on them – animals that have a lot in common with such an atmosphere of unreal, detachment from everyday life. They are creatures often staring at a distance, frozen in their catlike pose, moving slowly, as if out of time.
– The topics I undertake may seem simple, maybe even obvious, but they are a personal experience for me, a record of my memories. To fully develop my vision, I think I would have to work on larger canvases – says Marta Sobierajska.
As she continues, in retrospect, she sees that she is constantly implementing one project, which she develops and sometimes breaks with completely different images. It cannot be denied that the matter of interiors, composition, play of light and its softness, adding elements that build a certain atmosphere are crucial for it and still inexhaustible.
In search of a new cultural context
For now, the artist divides her time into creating and working full-time. As he says, he tries to impose some rigor on himself and paint as much as possible. She also dreams of exhibitions in distant regions of the world.
– I am thinking about a completely different culture from ours, I mean Asia. When it comes to the European, Western context – I think that the perceptions of the audience would be similar here. I am interested in throwing images into a completely different context that would give the works new interpretations and experiences. I feel that such an experience would be developing – says Marta Sobierajska.
