Jerzy Mierzejewski
Jerzy Mierzejewski was born on July 13, 1917 in Krakow, and died on June 14, 2012 in Warsaw. He came from an artistic family. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, where he studied in 1937-39. He obtained his diploma only after the war in 1956.
Mierzejewski belonged to the Polish avant-garde movement of artists known as Formists. He was the president of the Painting Section of the Association of Polish Artists and Designers in Warsaw. He fulfilled himself not only as a painter, but also a scriptwriter and teacher of the Lodz Film School. Among the artist's most characteristic works are landscapes, there are also portraits and works inspired by mythological motifs. Most of them are kept in the hazy tones.
In search of inspiration, the artist traveled frequently, incl. to England, Austria, France, Germany and the United States. In the years 1975-1988, Mierzejewski worked and lived in the Netherlands. He return to Poland until 1989, and eight years later he was awarded the Jan Cybis Award, which is a distinction for lifetime achievement.
The artist presented his works at numerous exhibitions in Poland and abroad. The last large exhibition of the paintings of Jerzy Mierzejewski, his brother Andrzej and their father Jacek took place in 2004 at the National Museum in Warsaw.
