Stefan Gierowski
He was born on May 21, 1925 in Częstochowa. In the years 1945-48 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków in the studios of Zbigniew Pronaszko and Karol Frycz. At the same time, he started studying art history at the Jagiellonian University. After graduation, he left for Warsaw, where from the 1960s he was teaching at the Academy of Fine Arts.
Stefan Gierowski in the first period of his work leaned towards simplifications drawn from naive art. The artist's figurative compositions from this period are characterized by visible influences of post-cubist rhythmic form. At the end of the 1950s, Gierowski became interested in non-figurative painting, and since then he has consistently marked his paintings with Roman numerals. Abstract, geometric compositions are characterized by sophisticated monochromatic colors. The artist used lines separating colorful stripes of different luminosity and saturation. The lines in Gierowski's work were interpreted as a reference to physics, they were seen as a transposition of physical diagrams, the image of shock waves, and the determination of the boundaries of the magnetic field. In the 1980s, the artist begins to express himself in a more subjective and even spiritual way. During this period, he creates the series "Painting the Ten Commandments". At that time, he used even bolder colors, in which geometric harmony is broken with vibrating spots.
The artist died on August 14, 2022, at the age of 97.
