Tadeusz Brzozowski

Tadeusz Brzozowski was born in 1918, died in 1987. He studied at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts, during the occupation he continued his studies at the Kunstgewerbeschule, eventually graduating in 1945 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Kraków. During the occupation, he cooperated closely with T. Kantor's underground theater. Until 1948 he exhibited with the Young Artists Group. In the years 1950-55 he did not participate in the official artistic life, he was involved in painting church polychromes and conservation. He was a member of the Krakow Group reactivated in 1957. In 1959 in Paris he joined the international movement "Phases". From 1977 he was a professor at the PWSSP in Poznań. In 1979-81 he was a professor at the Krakow Academy of Fine Arts.

Initially, he created figurative painting, abandoned it in favor of informel. Art similar to abstraction contained elements of the grotesque that commented and interpreted reality. In the last years of his life he returned to figurative art. The artist's art represented Poland twice at the Biennale in Sao Paulo (1959 and 1975) and in Venice (1962). The artist's great posthumous exhibition was presented in 1997-8 at the National Museum in Warsaw, and then in Zakopane, Wrocław and Kraków.
